5 Tips I Learned Skiing in Breckenridge

Estimated Read Time 2 minutes

If you’re gearing up for the winter sports this season, or looking for a quick getaway with your loved ones, there’s a perfect snow spot that we always swear by – Breckenridge, Colorado. Whether it is your first time skiing, you are skiing with kids, or you are an expert on the slopes, there are plenty of things to do in Breckenridge in the winter! As we all know, traveling can get stressful really quickly; so we’re here to give you a few tips to make sure you have the most fun this winter season!

1. Cover up or get burned!

Firstly, make sure you have all the proper attire to shield you from the extreme rays! The sun is stronger because of the reflective snow so even if it is cold and cloudy, you need to be sure you have the proper protection. A few ways you can help protect your skin and keep warm are as follows:

  • Wear multiple layers.
  • Choose wool (or a polypropylene material) over cotton. It’s more absorbent for sweat.
  • Use a waterproof shell so the water doesn’t seep in.
  • Wear fleece hats, no baseball caps!
  • Use neck gators, face masks, polarized sunglasses, goggles, and most importantly, sunscreen! Cover everything!
  • Choose one pair of warm socks rather than trying to wear multiple layers of socks. Layering up on your feet doesn’t leave room in the boot to retain heat.

2. Don’t get sick, avoid these things!

The base elevation is 9,600 feet, and the summit elevation is 12,998 feet. It won’t be a fun time if you get sick on those slopes, so here are some do’s and don’ts to keep you feeling fine as you make your way down the slopes!

  • Drink 3-4 quarts per day, look for drinks with electrolytes
  • Eat food with high carbohydrates; it will help with absorbing oxygen
  • Prepare a canister of oxygen, if you know you are very sensitive. You can buy or rent oxygen concentrators at the resorts/medical stores.

  • Drink alcohol
  • Use tobacco
  • Take anti-depressants
  • Eat food or drinks with high sugar/salt/caffeine content

3. Getting around town, with the window down!

There are a few ways to make your life easier when traveling around Breckenridge.

  • Take the free shuttle from Free Ride Transportation! This shuttle will take you around downtown and stops at multiple tourist spots like the ice rink, Peak 9, etc. Check out Free Ride map for detailed stops.
  • Rent your own car. There are plenty of parking spots around town, but know that they will cost you. The fees range from $5 to $20 a day. Look for free day skier parking like on Airport Road. This area provides free shuttle service to the base of the gondola.

4. Tickets first, everything else later!

Buy your lift tickets and gondola passes ahead of time to save time, headache and money! Many deals can be found online and in local grocers. Be sure to check websites like Liftopia for bargains, and Breckenridge Ski Resort for deals on multi-day ski passes.
