Top 5 Things to do in Charleston SC with Kids

Estimated Read Time 2 minutes

Charleston, South Carolina is a wonderful, family-friendly vacation destination. The area is rich with history, outdoor activities and great food. If you are planning a vacation to the area, take a look at our top 5 things to do in Charleston, SC with (or without) kids!

Waterfront Park

1. Play in the fountains at Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park can keep you and your kids having fun for hours. There is a fountain that is setup like a splash pad where the kids can run, get wet and have fun. While they are air-drying, walk out on the pier to relax on the family-sized swings overlooking the Cooper River. Make sure you stop to read the plaques looking out on the water to get a quick history lesson about the area!

French Quarter

2. Take a tour around the French Quarter (the one that is tamer than its famous counterpart!)

This area of Charleston is beautiful and you and the kids will enjoy wandering around the streets, visiting the local shops and experiencing the history of this area. Take a tour on a horse drawn carriage or, experience the area on your own with a self-guided walking tour. If your little ones are still in a stroller, note that the cobblestone streets can be tough to navigate. We recommend a jogging stroller to ensure a comfortable ride and prevent damage to your umbrella stroller.

3. Stroll through the Charleston City Market

The Charleston City Market is full of local vendors and artisans selling their crafts, but the most intriguing are those that are hand making sweetgrass baskets right at their booths. Let the kids watch and learn from these amazing artists.

Citadel Ring

4. Experience military tradition at The Citadel

Ok, so this may have made our list because of The Citadel is my husband’s military school rival, but if you are traveling with a cranky teenager it might help you get them back in line! In all seriousness, the campus is beautiful and worth a visit. Head over on Friday afternoon to watch the cadets parade around the drill field. If the kids need some playtime afterwards, nearby Hampton Park has a great playground and walking trails.

5. Go to the beach!

There are several beaches within a 20 – 30 minute drive of downtown Charleston. Our favorite area for families is Isle of Palms. This area is relatively quiet, very walkable and, if you choose to stay in this area, there are plenty of beautiful rental properties that will provide a comfortable stay for the entire family. We recommend booking a spot near JC Long and Ocean so you can enjoy the live music at The Dinghy from your own patio after the little ones head to bed for the night!
